Cari Amici,
molti di voi seguono da tempo il nostro rapporto di amicizia con la Birmania. Questi sono i mesi delicati e decisivi per il cambiamento politico verso un’autentica democrazia.
In questi giorni abbiamo lanciato la Petizione Internazionale alle più alte cariche dello Stato del Myanmar per il cambiamento della Costituzione in Birmania. Come sapete la Costituzione, voluta dai militari nel 2008, stabilisce che il 25% dei seggi parlamentari sia assegnato ai militari e che ad Aung San Suu Kyi sia impedito di essere eletta Presidente a causa della cittadinanza inglese dei suoi figli.
La situazione politica là è confusa e incerta ma in movimento. Le elezioni politiche dovrebbero tenersi entro l’anno. La Costituzione non è stata modificata, ne stanno discutendo in Parlamento e forse si prevede un referendum.
Siamo stati da Aung San Suu Kyi a fine dicembre con un gruppo di quaranta persone, ci ha ricevuto a casa sua. Un incontro unico. Ci ha detto che l’Europa, soprattutto alcuni Paesi, pensano che in Birmania sia vero ciò che sembra, chiede che non si vada solo per affari ma che si discuta di politica e di democrazia, recentemente in un’intervista al Financial Times ha parlato di “parodia” della democrazia.
La Birmania e Aung San Suu Kyi sembrano lontane, ma si attendono dal mondo una speciale vicinanza.

Noi stiamo diffondendola in tutti i Paesi del mondo, fate anche voi la stessa cosa. Il mondo è uno solo, siamo tutti collegati, spesso amici, da un capo all’altro della terra vogliamo la stessa cosa: la democrazia, il dialogo, la non violenza, che il popolo birmano e Aung San Suu Kyi siano liberi davvero, che la Costituzione in Myanmar sia cambiata.
Se le Autorità del Myanmar sentiranno la voce del mondo, la Costituzione sarà cambiata.

Aung San Suu Kyi really free: let’s amend the Burmese Constitution

The current Constitution of Burma, enforced by the military Regime in 2008, prevents Aung San Suu Kyi, Nobel Prize for peace and leader of the opposition, from running for President.

Clause 59 (f) prevents Aung San Suu Kyi from running for the Presidential elections, because she has family bonds with foreigners: her two sons are British citizens. This clause was written to prevent her people from electing her and to prevent her from taking a leading role in Burma.

Since more than one year, Aung San Suu Kyi is requesting to amend this Constitution. In her Country, five million of citizens signed a petition promoted by NLD and the democratic movement for the change of the Constitution.

The Burmese people cannot choose her as President and cannot vote for all their representatives in the Parliament House.

The next election, which is due on October 2015, must be “really free”.

We ask the Burma government to amend the clause 59 (f) of the Constitution to let Aung San Suu Kyi run for President with a fair election law.

This international petition is being promoted by the Italian Association “Amici della Birmania” (www.amiciziaitaliabirmania.it).
