Mission Gentiloni Minister in Myanmar

The Minister Paolo Gentiloni today begins a mission in Myanmar that will last until 8 April. Gentiloni met Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi, the minister was the first between the Foreign Ministers of the West to meet her the day after his assumption of the ministry of Foreign Burmese. They are also scheduled meetings with President Htin Kyaw, with the Minister of Religious Affairs and Cultural, Thura U Aung Ko, with the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Gen Min Aung Hlaing, Minister of Construction, U Win Khaing.

The visit comes at a historic moment for Myanmar. The settlement of the government led by the National League for Democracy, represents a milestone in the process of democratic transition in the country. It comes at a time in which there are many possibilities for Italian companies.

After 50 years of international isolation, Myanmar is now considered a country with great opportunities for economic development. The trade with Italy is increasing, and there is a growing interest of our companies, witnessed by the participation of more than 100 companies at the “Italian Products Expo 2015” in Yangon in October 2015, organized with the support of Embassy and ICE.

The main opportunities for cooperation are found in the agro-food sector and the machinery for the agro-industry; mining; tourism; energy; infrastructure and construction; hydrocarbons.

Myanmar is a priority country for Italian Cooperation. Since 2011, the value of assistance amounts to over 35 million euro.

During the visit it will be signed the Cultural Cooperation Agreement, science and technology, which provides a framework for developing relations between the higher education systems of the two countries in scientific, technological, literary, cultural and artistic, sports and entertainment and information.

The goal is to contribute to a better understanding between peoples and cultures of the two countries and strengthen cooperation in the cultural, scientific and technological.

A field, the historical and cultural, in which Italy makes available its expertise by participating, together with UNESCO and the Ministry of Burmese culture, the preservation of the heritage of the country. The Italian contribution began in 2011 and reached an amount of $ 1.4 million. The projects implemented so far implemented by UNESCO, allowed the Ministry of Culture to preserve important sites, such as the Ancient City of Pyu, inserted into the UNESCO list in 2014, and the archaeological site of Bagan.

The Embassy in Yangon, for 2016 has provided a rich program of events entitled “Italy in Myanmar 2016: our legacy from the past, our vision of the future”, which includes a range of initiatives and events ranging from photography, diffusion of the Italian language, haute cuisine, the promotion of film and music.

In this framework, the Minister Gentiloni participate inter alia in the opening ceremony of the event with the award ceremony of the photo contest “Yangon cultural heritage: looking back at the past in order to develop a sustainable future.”
